LESTER ROSEN, FOUNDER & CEO

Lester S. Rosen, Founder and CEO of Employment Screening Resources (ESR), graduated UCLA with Phi Beta Kappa honors, and received a J.D. degree from the University of California at Davis School of Law, serving on the school Law Review. After practicing in a large Los Angeles law firm for three years with an emphasis in civil litigation and employment law, he joined the Riverside County District Attorneys office. His duties included career criminal and homicide prosecutions.  He opened a private criminal law practice in Marin County in 1985. He specialized in criminal law and his practice has included federal crimes and death penalty cases. He holds the highest attorney rating of A.V. in Martindale-Hubbell. He has served as an adjunct professor of law teaching criminal law and procedure at Hastings College of the Law, and has served as faculty member and program chairman of the nationally recognized Hastings College of Trial Advocacy.

In 1996, he joined with an established background and corporate security agency, the Doane Agency, to create a new firm, Employment Screening Resources (ESR) (a division of a California Corporation), dedicated to promoting a safe and profitable workplace for both employers and employees. In 2003, that firm was rated as the top screening firm in the US in the first independent study of the industry in research report prepared by the Intellectual Capital Group, a division of HR.com. 

He is a consultant, writer and frequent presenter nationwide on pre-employment screening and safe hiring issues. His speaking appearances have included numerous national and statewide conferences.  He has qualified and testified in the California, Florida, and Arkansas Superior Court as an employment screening expert on issues surrounding safe hiring and due diligence. In 2000, he testified as an expert on background screening on behalf of the plaintiff in a case where the jury awarded 9.3 million dollars to the family of a doctor murdered by a carpet cleaner who was hired without any background investigation.

He is the author of "The Safe Hiring Manual - The Complete Guide to Keeping Criminals, Imposters, and Terrorists out of the Workplace" (Facts on Demand Publications). He is also featured as the narrator in a 23 minute training video by Kantola Productions called "Safe Hiring: How You Can Avoid Bad Hires."  He has also written "The Safe Hiring Audit," has written and appeared in a training DVD on negligent hiring, and has produced the first industry course on background checks (See: http://www.backgroundchecktraining.com/).

Mr. Rosen was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), a professional trade organization for the screening industry which has nearly 300 members. He was also elected to the first board of directors and served as the co-chairman in 2004.

As a recognized expert in background screening, he has been quoted by USA Today, Businessweek, Reuters, Christian Science Monitor, HR Magazine, and numerous newspapers, web sites and trade journals across the United States.

He has also been active in working on legislation in California. In 2002, he worked with the California legislature to amend AB 655, a law that adversely affected employers in the area of reference checks and hiring in California.  He continues to be involved in working on California legislation effecting employers.  He can be reached at lsr@ESRcheck.com.

BRAD LANDIN, PRESIDENT

Background screening industry veteran Brad Landin joined the Employment Screening Resources (ESR) management team in April of 2011 and assumed the role of President in September of 2011. He is responsible for all aspects of the company's strategy, operations, and finances. He brings over 30 years of management experience in both the private and public sectors and 20 years of experience in regulated industry compliance matters to ESR.

Landin has worked in the screening industry since 1999 and was instrumental in making an industry startup one of the top 25 background screening firms as measured by revenue. Landin also has extensive experience in background screening operations, as well as legal compliance, and is an active participant in NAPBS, the background screening industry trade association, including a role in their lobbying efforts at the federal and state levels.

His experience and expertise in all aspects of the background screening industry will be a critical part of ESR’s growth strategy, and he brings the benefit of unmatched industry credentials to ESR’s national client base.

JIM CROCKETT, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

The tremendous responsibility of operations at ESR falls on the very capable shoulders of Jim Crockett, Executive Vice President. Jim not only directs the day-to-day operations of ESR, he also oversees ESR's nationwide network of court researchers, and manages the company's day-to-day finances. His efforts provide both the most accurate and cost-effective solutions to our clients' needs and bring exceptional value to each client's employment screening objectives.

Jim has a rich history of working within HR and management. Prior to joining ESR, he was with Lawgic.com, a software company that creates employee handbooks, online sexual harassment training courses and other HR related products. Before working with Lawgic.com he served twelve years in management for a large national retailer. In addition to his career in the private sector, Jim served three years in the United States Army as a Communications Specialist. Following an Honorable Discharge, he went on to serve an additional 3 years in the Army Reserve.

JARED CALLAHAN, DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT 

Employment Screening Resources (ESR) is service driven and customer focused. Branding ESR as the nationwide leader of employment screening, through expertise and experience, is the duty of Jared Callahan, Director of Business Development. He brings over ten years of sales experience and a full understanding of the operations behind employment screening to ESR. Each day, Jared leads a team that communicates to numerous businesses the value that ESR brings to a company's employment screening initiatives. In addition to answering questions from interested parties and educating prospective clients on legal compliance issues he is also in charge of ESR's marketing efforts, ensuring there is a consistent message in both our print and electronic marketing channels.

Jared began his career in employment screening in 1996 with a private investigative firm. What started as a sales associate position grew into a sales & marketing department which enjoyed profitable growth over several years. During his time at the firm Jared also served as the manager of operations for 1 year. In addition to employment screening he worked in the rental car industry for a number of years and as an investigator in the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of a large workers' compensation insurance company.

JOHN CUMMINGS, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & CHIEF INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICER (CISO)

John Cummings joined the ESR team in 2011 as Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and is responsible for developing and implementing the company’s Information Security policies and monitoring data and privacy protection, risk assessments, and incident response.  John’s main skills are in the area of Internet/Intranet programming and server management. Within the area of Internet programming, John specializes in database driven Web sites using server side CGI/ASAPI applications and programming languages to deliver dynamic Web content. John works closely with the Designers to build the framework of the site.  He has extensive experience with ASP & VBScript, Visual Basic, ActiveX, Cold Fusion, Perl, CGI scripting, Javascript, DHTML, SQL and other database management systems. In addition John has three years of NT Network Administration and extensive project management experience. 

John’s experience includes company founder and Technology Director of Sight Design, a web development firm, and shared management of Marinternet, where he executed network and communications hardware design and administration, managed customer service, performed programming for all hosting services, and administrated the company’s day-to-day business affairs.  John worked with Marinternet since its inception and until its sale, and was one of the company’s owners.  Prior to John’s activities with Marinternet and Sight Design, he spent several years as a programming consultant for several e-commerce and information oriented internet companies, and created numerous CGI tools for several bay area-based ISPs.  An accomplished artist, John earned his Bachelors Degree in Fine Art at San Francisco State University in 1991, specializing in Printmaking. He earned his Teaching Credential at Sonoma State University in 1994, and taught middle school and high school art in several Sonoma County schools before transferring his creative skills into computer and Internet-oriented work.

ORIANNA "ORY" TUCKER, CLIENT RELATIONS MANAGER

Orianna “Ory” Tucker joined the Employment Screening Resources (ESR) team as Client Relations Manager in 2011 and is responsible for all client care matters at ESR. She has worked in the consumer reporting industry since 2005 and possesses a proven track record in client service, operations, and compliance. She welcomes the opportunity to provide background screening data reflecting the highest levels of quality, compliance, service, and integrity in the industry.

Before joining Employment Screening Resources, Tucker had experience in both client service management at background and drug screening firms as well as in the private investigation, legal, and federal government arenas. She is an active member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), a non-profit trade association representing the background screening industry, serving as the webinar sub-committee chair of the Education Committee. Tucker is also a member of the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA) and holds a Bachelor of Science (BS), cum laude, in criminal justice from California Lutheran University.

Along with a deep understanding of the background screening industry, her years of experience and service reflect the core values of ESR which include a commitment to serving the needs of clients, professional excellence, organizational integrity, consumer protection, and an industry leading standard for legal compliance.

THOMAS AHEARN, ESR NEWS EDITOR & SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

An addition to the Employment Screening Resources (ESR) team in 2010, ESR News Editor and Social Media Manager Thomas Ahearn updates the  ESR News Blog (http://www.esrcheck.com/wordpress/) with "Employment Screening Information for Employers" vital to business executives, human resources professionals, security personnel, recruiters, and consumers. The ESR News Blog covers a variety of topics such as credit reports, criminal records, data privacy, discrimination,        E-Verify, legal risks, negligent hiring, workplace violence, and use of search engines and social network sites for employment screening. He also creates and updates content on the ESR website at http://www.esrcheck.com/, serves as administrator for the ESR Online Safe Hiring Course, and provides Marketing/PR functions including articles, press releases, webinars, white papers, newsletters, SEO, and ESR social media sites on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Before joining ESR, Thomas served as Media Relations Advisor for another employment screening firm. His education includes a B.S. in Mass Communication/Public Relations from Boston University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Emerson College.
